Electrical Stimulation + Smart Glove Program Yields Promising Results
New research accepted for publication by the Archives of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, titled “Virtual Reality Rehabilitation with Functional
Electrical Stimulation Improves UE Function After Stroke”, shows some nice
improvement with the combination of the Smart Glove

Hyeyoung Lee and her team compared cyclic FES (functional electrical
stimulation) to FES in conjunction with the Rapael Smart Glove for 20 sessions,
5 times per week for 30 minutes each session over 4 weeks for chronic stroke
patients. The FES + Smart Glove group showed ​statistically significant
improvements in the Fugl-Meyer assessment for hand, wrist and forearm function.

Greater improvements were noted in the combination group ​compared to FES for
all outcomes except​ the Stroke Impact Scale-ADL/IADL score. There were larger
absolute differences in ​Wolf Motor Function Test,
Stroke Impact Scale-Strength and Stroke Impact Scale-Hand​ scores compared to
FES group.

vessels (Ischemic Stroke) or bleeding (Hemorrhagic Stroke) in the brain. Yes,
there are two types of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic.

In the US, 140 thousand people die from stroke every year, one in every 40
seconds suffer from stroke, and one in every 4 minutes die from stroke. As such,
stroke is a much more common disease than people consider, and unlike the
pervasive idea that it is a disease suffered only by the elderly, it also occurs
in many younger generations due to changes in eating habits.[1]



Once the stroke occurs, 1.9 million neurons a minute and 120 million neurons an
hour are damaged, possibly causing an eternal impairment and also the associated
aftermath.Stroke may also cause problems in the language center and render
communication difficult, paralyze the face, or even worse, result in hemiplegia
(partial body paralysis). The hands, arms, and legs may not move like before,
making it difficult to carry out daily tasks such as walking, eating, washing
the face, and taking a shower.

Therefore, continuous stroke treatment and rehabilitation training are of
absolute necessity. For example, if you are not able to bend your fingers or
freely move your wrist from the front and back or up and down due to stroke, you
will need to receive stroke treatment and rehabilitation training in accordance
with the symptoms. Movements such as continuous flexing and straightening of
fingers and bending of wrist up and down are by themselves rehabilitation
training. If you cannot move your arm from right to left or up and down, you
would need stroke treatment in straightening and flexing your arm.

Stroke
First, the goals of stroke treatment and rehabilitation training are the
enhancement and maintenance of movement performance.
Rehabilitation training must be conducted every day on a continuous basis. Just
as we exercise for our health, rehabilitation training should also be done
consistently upon a fixed time schedule. The purpose of rehabilitation is not
only for enhancing movement performance on the part of the body that has lost
its function, but also for managing the body so that the conditions would not
get worse.


Second, if you do not receive stroke treatment and rehabilitation training, you
may lose all movement performance on the part of the body that has lost its
function.

Your body would already be under deterioration of movement performance due to
stroke, but if you do not receive stroke treatment and rehabilitation training,
you may never be able to make that movement. If you refuse to train your arm
that can merely move within a limited range, your arm will only be able to move
within that boundary. Also, completely dysfunctional parts of the body will
never gain recovery even after belated attempts at rehabilitation training.


Third is to return to your daily life through stroke treatment and
rehabilitation training.
Patients suffering from stroke wish to return to their daily lives, where they
can hold a cup to drink water, wash dishes, clean the room, and even further, go
back to work. The only way to do so is through continuous rehabilitation
training.

With repetition as one of the main keys to improving movement, it’s important to 
consider creative ways to incorporate repetition into your daily rehabilitation

    normal manner. In a review of studies on mirror therapy compared to other
    interventions, mirror therapy was shown to have a significant effect on
    motor function as well as pain and visual neglect.
