Grasp & Release Activities after Stroke

Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke.(1) Seventy Five percent of these stroke survivors will present with upper extremity impairments.(2) People who have experienced upper extremity impairments will commonly present with difficulties in grasping and releasing objects.(3) Many people who show signs of upper extremity impairments after a stroke will continue to present with limitations in grasp and release activities for many months to years after their stroke. Therefore improving upper extremity function is a key element to rehabilitation after a stroke.

Many stroke survivors present with tightness in their affected hand and have a difficult time opening their hand and straightening their fingers. This is caused by something called spasticity. Spasticity is caused by damage to the portion of the brain that controls voluntary movements. This damage can make it difficult for the nervous system to communicate with the muscles in the hand. There are many different interventions available to treat upper extremity impairments including spasticity, one of these interventions is splinting.

Splinting is commonly used to reduce spasticity, prevent contractures and improve range of motion in order to increase function after a neurological injury such as stroke.
